چکیده

Iron±sulfur (Fe S) proteins are present in all forms of life and perform essential roles in, for example, respiration, photosynthesis, and nitrogen fixation. They contain prosthetic groups of complexed iron and TMacid-labile∫ sulfide. These Fe S clusters were identified about 40 years ago; however, it was not until the late 1990s that biosynthetic routes for in vivo assembly started to emerge. The last few years have seen great strides in our knowledge of the proteins involved in Fe S cluster assembly, the core biochemical mechanism, and the specific features of the biosynthesis pathway in eukaryotes. This review will focus on what has been learned so far from Fe S protein biogenesis in baker's yeast, a model organism for higher eukaryotes. Certain aspects of this topic have been discussed in more detail in recent reviews: comparison of Fe S cluster assembly in bacteria and eukaryotes, the role of chaperones in Fe S cluster biogenesis, and a pathological perspective. The most common Fe S clusters found in nature are the rhombic [2Fe 2S] and the cubane [4Fe 4S] clusters (Figure 1).

Cooking the Books: Formalizing JMM Implementation Recipes

The Java Memory Model (JMM) is intended to characterize the meaning of concurrent Java programs. Because of the model’s complexity, however, its definition cannot be easily transplanted within an optimizing Java compiler, even though an important rationale for its design was to ensure Java compiler optimizations are not unduly hampered because of the language’s concurrency features. In response...

Iron–Sulfur Models of Protein Active Sites

Iron–sulfur clusters appear in a great many proteins as both electron-transport and enzymatic sites (see Iron–Sulfur Proteins); for this reason there has been great interest for 30 years in the development and understanding of iron–sulfur model complexes. Both structure and properties of synthetic analogs of 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-iron protein active sites have been studied extensively.1 This articl...

Thioredoxin reductase system mediates iron binding in IscA and iron delivery for the iron-sulfur cluster assembly in IscU.

IscA is a key member of the iron-sulfur cluster assembly machinery found in bacteria and eukaryotes. Previously, IscA was characterized as an alternative iron-sulfur cluster assembly scaffold, as purified IscA can host transient iron-sulfur clusters. However, recent studies indicated that IscA is an iron-binding protein that can provide iron for the iron-sulfur cluster assembly in a proposed sc...

Effects of Sulfur Application on Soil pH and Uptake of Phosphorus, Iron and Zinc in Apple Trees

The main reasons for the fixation of some elements and consequently nutrient deficiencies, especially phosphorus, iron and zinc, are high levels of calcium (calcareous soils) and soil pH. Two sulfur fertilizers (sulfur alone and sulfur + organic material + Thiobacillus spp.) with two rates (2 and 4 kg sulfur/tree) were used to decrease soil pH and availability of P, Fe and Zn in apple trees dur...
